The Facts About Climate Change
While man-made climate change itself is very complicated, the physics are relatively straight forward. The gasses carbon dioxide and methane, among others, act like the glass in a green house, the suns energy gets in but it can’t get out.
The levels of green-house gasses in the atmosphere have increased due to human activities like agriculture and burning fossil fuels, and now more heat is being trapped.
While there are a few exceptions, there is overwhelming evidence that the planet is warming, sea level is rising, oceans are becoming more acidic and ice caps are melting.
This has implications for our ability to produce food on land and in the oceans, for where we will be able to live, on disease transmission, on the health of wild places, and on the number of extreme weather events. All these have very large human costs some of which is already apparent around the world.
There is a great opportunity for the U.S.A. to become a world leader in technology to reverse man-made climate change.
Evidence of a Warming Planet
A 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reviewed multiple reconstructions of temperature over the past 1,300 years (right) based on ice cores, tree rings and other indirect measurements, The panel concluded that evidence for global warming was “unequivocal”.
Climate Change and the Church
In recent years various religious groups have started advocating for better stewardship of the planet, specifically with regard to man-made climate change.
